What emotional response do you aim for in luxury hospitality environments?
The goal is effortless comfort and refined intimacy. Not an obvious “wow” moment, but a feeling that guests are welcome, emotionally at ease, and not overwhelmed.

How do you use contrast, shadow and darkness as design tools?
Darkness is not an absence. It is an active design element.
Shadow frames light and gives a space character. Deliberate contrast creates drama and draws the eye. Areas of darkness make lit surfaces feel more significant. Together, they give a space depth and emotional resonance that flat, even illumination never achieves.
Which materials do you find most rewarding to illuminate?
Materials that interact with light to reveal texture, warmth and depth are the most compelling. Stone, timber, brushed metals, fabric and layered finishes all respond differently depending on the angle and quality of light directed at them.
The right illumination makes these materials felt, not just seen. That is what distinguishes high-end hospitality lighting from the rest.
What is the single most important piece of advice for designers using lighting to elevate a hospitality space?
Design with emotion first, function second, then consider operational needs and technology.
