Hospitality Lighting: How to Select the Right Products and Technology

We put your most asked questions about hospitality lighting product selection to an industry expert with years of experience designing for hotels, restaurants, bars and spas. Here is what they had to say.

Product Selection and Technology

What qualities matter most when selecting luminaires for premium hospitality?

Light quality is always the priority, but it cannot be evaluated in isolation. The following all need to work together:

  • Precision and optical control
  • Colour stability across the dimming range
  • Dimming performance
  • Build quality and long-term reliability
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Integration with the architecture and interior design

What makes a manufacturer suitable for high-end hospitality projects?

Reliable manufacturers consistently deliver performance, optical precision, build quality and aesthetic refinement. The right choice depends on the specific requirements of each luminaire rather than brand loyalty alone.

Staying current on LED technology, control gear and dimming systems is essential. Budget constraints also play a role in determining which manufacturers and technologies can be specified.

How do you evaluate LED light source quality beyond CRI?

CRI is a useful starting point but it does not tell you how a light source will feel in a real hospitality environment.

Other factors to assess include:

  • Spectral distribution
  • R9 and saturated colour performance
  • Colour consistency and binning
  • Dimming behaviour across the range

Physical samples are essential. You need to see the light source in the actual space or a representative mock-up.

How important are beam angle, optics and glare control in product selection?

These factors can be more important than output. Beam angles and optics place light exactly where it needs to be and nowhere else.

Glare is one of the quickest ways to destroy guest comfort. Cut-off angles, baffles, louvres and viewing angles all need to be considered as part of the specification.

What makes a fixture truly hospitality-grade?

A hospitality-grade fixture delivers performance, reliability, optical precision, operational functionality and aesthetic integrity. Style and price alone do not define it.

Luminaires need to blend into the architecture while providing the right ambience, withstanding constant use, and giving operators the control they need without drawing attention to themselves.
